Establishing a New Protected Area: A Step Forward for Increased Biodiversity Protection and Community Development

We are on our way to establishing a new protected area (NAP) in northwest Madagascar - the only one in the Betsiboka region! We have been working on this process for a while now and we are now one step closer to making it a reality.

On June 18th 2021, IMPACT Madagascar met with policy makers to discuss the creation of a new protected area in the Boeny and Betsiboka regions, combining our Ankirihitra and Madiromirafy project sites. There were a total of 15 people in attendance at this meeting including three regional authorities (the Governor of Mahajanga, the Prefect of Mahajanga and the Prefect of Maevatanana), two representatives of DIREDD Boeny-Betsiboka (Director of DIREDD Boeny-Betsiboka and Chief CIREF Betsiboka), six representatives of the central Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development including the Minister, the Director of Cabinet, the Director of Protected Areas and Natural Resources and Ecosystems (DAPRNE), the Director General of Sustainable Development (DGSD), and two technical advisors.

This is particularly important because these sites contain one of the most globally threatened ecosystems: tropical dry and gallery forests. In Madagascar, only a few small areas of dry forest are formally under protection. Additionally, these habitats are linked with important wetlands, which are crucial for supporting community livelihoods. They also sustain high levels of biodiversity including critically endangered and endemic species. Like all of our projects, this new protected area will be equally focused on the local communities, not solely on the protection of the habitat and the wildlife within.

All of the political decision makers present at the meeting were in support of the establishment of this new protected area and they each gave the green light to move forward with the project. This new protected area has the chance to be very important in the Betsiboka and Boeny regions both for the environment and for communities.

La semaine dernière, IMPACT Madagascar a eu une réunion avec les hautes autorités régionales et les décideurs pour discuter de la création d'une NAP, combinant nos sites de projet Ankirihitra et Madiromirafy. Parmi les autorités, le Directeur DIREDD Boeny-Betsiboka, Madame Le Ministre Baomiavotse Vahinala Raharinirina, Ministère de l'Environnement et du Développement Durable, et le Gouverneur de Boeny.

Cette NAP est particulièrement importante car ces sites abritent l'un des écosystèmes les plus menacés au monde : les forêts tropicales sèches et les forêts-galeries. En outre, ces habitats contiennent d'importantes zones humides, qui sont cruciales pour la vie des communautés voisines. Ils abritent également de biodiversité rare, notamment des espèces endémiques et en danger critique d'extinction.

Comme tous nos projets, cette nouvelle aire protégée sera également axée sur les communautés locales, et pas seulement sur la protection de l'habitat et de la faune qui s'y trouve.

Tous les décideurs présents à la réunion étaient en faveur de la création de cette nouvelle aire protégée et ont tous donné le feu vert pour avancer à la réalisation du projet Cette NAP a de la chance d'être très importante dans les régions de Betsiboka et Boeny, tant pour l'environnement que pour les communautés !
